Not Everyone Loves Marineland. – Marineland Opening Day Demo – May 18th.

Over a 1000 people joined in on the Marineland Opening Demo organized by Marineland Animal Defense this weekend. It felt like a pretty awesome show of solidarity with dozens of whistleblowers facing lawsuits, the captive marine and other animal life locked up in the jail/”amusement” park, as well as the community at large (please see GoHomeless.ca,) in addition to the various SLAPP suits (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) they’ve thrown at organizers and the media and anyone else they don’t like (or threatened with lawsuits – even the OSPCA).

Toronto Tuesday – Queen West, HotDocs, … Niagara Falls?

This weekend was one of those action packed weekends that only seems possible in a big city. There was Jane’s Walk, the Toronto Marathon, the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, and so many other things. We did none of those, but still managed to fill up our weekend with THINGS. So many glorious things. I spent the morning finding things to send to my RedditGifts partner for Awesomesocks this month. Which resulted in going to every store in Queen West that looked like it’d have fun socks. You’d never think fun non grown up socks would be hard to find… but they are. I ended up at Clic Klak (435 Queen Street W) and found exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully my exchange partner likes them too! One place on Queen Street that I can’t pass without either going in, or staring longingly inside the window is The Paper Place. It’s kind of funny considering how much of my life is strictly digital, but there is something so friendly and fun about a handwritten letter or note that my usual quick emails just don’t satisfy. I wanted to send out thank you cards to everyone that had donated to my WWF CN Tower Climb (since I promised to send everyone a picture) and I found absolutely lovely ones from the Paper Source via waste not paper in Chicago.

Niagara Falls, the Guru, & Being a Tourist with my Mom.

The day after the Engagement Party I cajoled my mother to visit Niagara Falls. She’s never been there, but it was a pretty hard sell, since we were exhausted from the night before. Regardless, I thought it was a worthwhile visit for someone from out of town and JC was driving his cousin back home to New York, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity. Once we got there we spent about three hours at the Outlet Malls on Lundy’s Lane. The one benefit of this visit other then buying a bagful of La Vie en Rose, was that it reminded me I needed new running shoes. My white whale… the entirely purple New Balance… was on sale at a shoe store… but two sizes too big (and they didn’t have any more sizes). We tried to find a place to have a snack and a coffee, but the area around the Outlet Mall’s is unsurprisingly lacking in the kind of coffee or snacks we were looking for. On previous trips to Niagara Falls, I wanted to go to The Guru, but something always got in the way. This time, we made it happen. The public transit options are VERY helpful in Niagara Falls, so it only took us a few minutes to catch a bus and be on our way to the tourist zone of Niagara Falls. Clifton Hills is home to a few three or four wax museums, haunted houses, dinosaur adventure, a Ferris wheel, and So Much…
