Sadies <del>is<\/del> was a vegan-friendly meatless restaurant that had been open since 2006, but now it&#8217;s closed. I&#8217;ve always seen it as an institution in Toronto and was a little surprised it wasn&#8217;t open even longer, but it probably helps that I have never known a Toronto without Sadie&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5027\" src=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies.jpg\" alt=\"Sadies\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies.jpg 604w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sadies-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sadie&#8217;s Diner was one of the first vegan-friendly restaurants I went to in Toronto on my first 48hr visit to Toronto back in 2008, and was one\u00a0of the first spots I visited when I arrived in 2010 (on the post-university &#8220;visit&#8221; that has extended to the present.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5026\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5026 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008.jpg\" alt=\"Tofu Club from Sadies Diner 2008\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008.jpg 604w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Tofu-Club-from-Sadies-Diner-2008-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tofu Club from Sadie&#8217;s Diner in 2008<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Known for their all-day-breakfasts, bright teal diner tables, and a huge wall of Pez (the owner Al is a serious collector), this spot did more than serve food &#8211; it was home to fundraisers, and art shows and community meetings, and more, and I hope that there will be other local vegan businesses that pick up the torch on the Vegan-Food-For-Charity front, because that level of thoughtfulness and community involvement will be missed.<\/p>\n<p>I remember <a href=\"https:\/\/meshell.ca\/blog\/animal-ark-ii-fundraiser-all-you-can-eat-chili-great-org-great-people-great-food\/\">the very first Chili-For-Charity fundraiser I attended<\/a> (which was also the first time JC and I went to Sadie&#8217;s together) back in April 2011 &#8211; for <a href=\"http:\/\/ark-ii.com\/index.php\/en\/\">ARK II<\/a>, an organization I&#8217;ve since joined as a\u00a0director. It was my first time meeting the folks involved with ARKII and learning more about what they do. I even won a wallet and a t-shirt from the raffle.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Sadies - Coney Fries by MeShell, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/prairiev\/17524609278\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7746\/17524609278_0cfcf11f10_z.jpg\" alt=\"Sadies - Coney Fries\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, farewell to Sadie&#8217;s, and best wishes to Al Ridley.
