Recently they posted about the <a title=\"ALDF Online Animal Book Club\" href=\"http:\/\/aldf.org\/article.php?id=2358\">Animal\u00a0Defense\u00a0Fund&#8217;s online book club<\/a>, which I think is an awesome fantastic idea &#8211; but &#8211; I&#8217;d like to see if there is any interest in making that happen in real life in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>I know we&#8217;re all busy people, with conflicting schedules, but we could meet once a month on the third Tuesday evening (for example) or another mutually agreeable time\/date of the month.<\/p>\n<p>So Toronto &#8211; are you interested? Let&#8217;s make this happen. Send me an\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:me@meshell.ca\">email<\/a>, send me a tweet (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mdgee\">@mdgee<\/a>), add yourself to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/355075024600964\/\">group on facebook<\/a>, give me your thoughts, and most of all join in.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some initial goals for this book club:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A positive respectful space to share, read, learn, and talk about animal friendly literature and non-fiction. This could\/would include:\n<ul>\n<li>Advocacy writings and exploring animal ethics through reading<\/li>\n<li>The history of animal activism and movements<\/li>\n<li>Memoirs of important figures<\/li>\n<li>Sharing animal friendly\u00a0children&#8217;s\u00a0literature (like sharing our favourite short books one month, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">This could also include reading books that are not pro-vegetarian\/vegan, but ones that really challenge us. We can take it in whatever direction we want it to go.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A place to learn from our readings and from each other.<\/li>\n<li>A place to potentially see things in a new way.<\/li>\n<li>A place to meet other people interested in animal rights and welfare in a relaxed social, non-academic, atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Just a few potential book suggestions:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From current works to classics, to anti-veg works, books exploring captivity, vivisection, and animal liberation movements, There is a lot out there, but here are just a couple\u00a0possibilities, in no particular order, and linked to the Toronto Public Library (where\u00a0available):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM1245611&amp;R=1245611\">Animals and Why They Matter<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Mary Midgley<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM2542072&amp;R=2542072\">Eating Animals<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0Jonathan Safran Foer<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM2692393&amp;R=2692393\">The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory<\/a> &#8211; Carol J.
