Vegan Night at The Depanneur – Every Wednesday. (and other days too)

I don’t think enough people know about The Depanneur (I’m just going to call them The Dep). Or people have heard about them, but don’t realize the rich diversity of options this little food spot has. When I mention it to fellow vegans in town – sometimes they know about it, and sometimes they don’t – it really seems like a missed opportunity to eat delicious food while not only supporting a local small business, but also supporting the unique work of talented chefs. The Dep really is the place where “interesting food things happen”. From having rent-able commercial kitchen space, to running workshops, and having tasty themed food events with guest chefs, it’s also home of the Rusholme Park Supper Club and retail space for local goods. Lately we’ve been really enjoying Veg Out Wednesdays with Emily Zimmerman/Pear & Pepper. New and creative things every week. I like the oddly transient quality of it. The nature of the event makes it impossible to have a favourite dish, because it’s always something different, but always something quite lovely. Every week, I look forward to seeing what she comes up with. Wednesday also happens to be the same night you can pick up your Fresh City Farms grocery order, so you could even pair the two up and feel extra productive. But wait, there’s more…. dinner on Wednesdays is also often Pay What You Can after 7:30. Because dinners at the Dep are always so varied, I started an album on facebook…

Planning a Vegan BBQ

Ever since we met, JC & and have been (unofficially) competing to make each other’s birthday spectacular. I try to do something awesome for him, and he does the same thing. At the moment, I think he’s winning this one, but that wont stop me from trying. So, as part of the week of birthday celebrations for JC this year, I threw a little BBQ birthday party. I’m looking forward to getting a copy of Grills Gone Vegan written by Tamasin Noyes. We’re big fans of the BBQ, but in the meantime, I had to put together my own menu of options, maybe you can use some of these too. BBQ Roasted Niagara Corn I love local corn, there is something so tasty about eating something grown on land you can actually visit. I felt the same way when I lived in Alberta and corn grown in Taber was the thing to buy. If you want to roast corn on the BBQ the most important thing to do, is get them in their husks – soak them in water for at least an hour or so before you plan to throw them on the BBQ. The corn steams and cooks in the husk, then after about 10 minutes, you can peel the corn (careful – it will be hot), and then leave it on the grill until the kernels are roasted a little bit more (I left it on for 3-5 minutes.) As a decent margarine alternative to the corn…

Beautiful regenerating weekends. Part one – Vegan potlucks.

The weekend before last was one of those weekends where you make a small plan, that grows and sets in motion several other events, which all end up wonderful, and you realize just how much you needed the time away. It all began a few weeks ago when Sarina, of Earthgiven Kitchen invited us to a vegan potluck in Waterloo. Then JC asked if we were going to Niagara VegFest. Well of course, yes to both. Then I started thinking… why not stay in Waterloo or Kitchener. Sarina suggested we stay at a little vegetarian B&B called Little City Farm… so we did, and made a cohesive weekend get-away out of all of our food related events. Other than the awesome veg related events happening in the Niagara Region this weekend, we also had contractors painting, and fixing up our townhouse to get it up for sale, so it was even nicer to get out of the house and out of the city. The drive was only about an hour and a half, but green and lush. It was nice to finally meet Sarina for the first time. The funny thing about connecting with people online, is that sometimes you never actually introduce yourself in real life. After being introduced via (the vegan)Lisa, & the Vegan Food Swap nearly a year ago, it was nice to put a voice to the face. Also, we got to meet her absolutely lovely inspiring children (and husband.) My ambitious plans for the Vegan…
