IRL Vegan Food Swap – Toronto

Once upon a time there was a Canadian Vegan Food swap, and it was fun to do a nationwide thing and trade with people that were complete strangers in other provinces and cities. I’m not ready to organize that Nationwide thing again – but a friend (Sarina over at Earthgiven Kitchen) recently did a local food swap with a meetup group she organizes in Kitchener-Waterloo, and I thought it might be fun to try that here as a little experiment too. So. If you’re interested, send me an email (me@meshell.ca) with the following information: Your Name: Preferences: Favourite Colour: Allergies: Fun Fact: Blog/Twitter/Instagram?: I will partner you up with someone randomly, and we will meet up on June 4th between 6:30pm and 7:30pm at Bloomers, in Toronto to do the exchange OR you and your partner can pick a time that’s more convenient for you to swap stuff. Here’s how it works: 1) If you want to participate, send me an email with your information ASAP – No later than May 15th. 2) You don’t have to be vegan to participate, just interested in veganism, trying new foods and meeting a new friend! But the contents of your swap box/bag/etc…

July Vegan Food Swap – Thanks Jamie!

I’m at a conference where using the internet seems like a terrible idea (for security reasons), and after having some website trouble, now it’s August 3rd and I’m just posting my awesome vegan food swap from Jamie. (Also check out her site for some seriously awesome photos.) Please pardon any typos, I’m posting from my phone and will fix them (if any) when I get back to Toronto. We picked up the glorious little box from the post office shortly before leaving to go to Las Vegas, and I ripped it open immediately. Good things do come in small packages. Jamie sent me a few great things from Edmonton, Alberta, some of which I was familiar with before (since… you know, I’m also from Edmonton…) So as part of my parcel she sent me a huge pack of coconut flakes, which will be used up for smoky coconut once I get back home (She was also kind enough to include a recipe,) She sent a long a container of the Chocolate Doctors Chocolate Ambrosia – which I’ve bought before from the Edmonton City Centre Farmers Market. I haven’t cracked open this jar yet, but I know I’m going to take…

May Vegan Food Swap from the Antique Appetite

Another month, another lovely swap, this time from the Antique Appetite, aka Jessica. So, funny story, I had matched Ms. Antique Appetite up to receive a package from Devon, and I had matched myself to send to Devon, and since we live in the tiny city of Toronto, we all ended up meeting up to exchange our swaps. Fine, this story isn’t funny at all, you just had to be there. I met Devon at Sadie’s Diner and Juice Bar to do the exchange. Sadie`s delicious grapefruit juice also happens to be totally perfect on a hot day, so win, win. Jessica is a few buildings over, we wandered over, and exchange treats again. Devon brought a cute pink box, with a bow, the swap I gave her was in a brown bloom cookie co paper bag. Devon wins. Jessica also wins, because the bag she gave me was covered in polka dots (anyone that’s seen me in the last few weeks has probably noticed a dot trend.) I went home to gleefully look at the contents of my present. Inside I found:

April Vegan Food Swap – Happy 1st Swapaversary from Jackie at the Short Stack Foodie

It’s been 1 year since the little food swap that could started up. I’ve been introduced to so many awesome and lovely people, bloggers, vegans, and foodies all over Canada. I know that people have started up blogs because of the swap, they’ve made friends, and real life connections because of the swap, and I love it. It runs on participation, and keeps going because of lovely vegans and veg-curious folks taking time every month to find vegan treats for someone that might be a complete stranger. I love the connections that keep happening, and I hope they just keep growing. One thing that I’d like to really push for for this year in Vegan Food Swap is more participation from areas that might not be major centers. We’ve got people from a few small towns, but I know there are vegans in almost every community, and I’d love to see them participate too. The thing I learned when living in Saskatoon (admittedly, not a truly small community, but still – at the time it was less vegan friendly than it is now) is that you can find completely plant-based awesomeness everywhere. it might not have “vegan” stamped on it,…

Vegan Food Swap – December – Thank you to Ms One Small Vegan.

Last month I received and sent a vegan food swap to Sasha of One Small Vegan. I enjoy her blog a lot because she’s always cooking something up, and it’s inspiring. I haven’t been cooking or baking as much as I’d like to, so it’s nice to see some encouraging and delicious treats on a regular basis. After been whisked away to (not-so)far away lands for my birthday, I had to wait until I got back to Toronto to finally open up my swap pack from Sasha, and then upon coming back from our trip, I immediately caught the flu and wasn’t in much of a position to write anything about anything. So now I’m catching up.

Vegan Food Swap – November – Thank you for the LPK Treats and please support local businesses

This month I was matched up with Carrie from 30×30, like me, she lives in Toronto. And like me, when I get someone local to my city, I wonder… what the heck should I sent them. She opted to send me stuff from her side of town, which I appreciated, because I never really get out there as often as I might like to. Even more appreciated is that she sent me treats from the soon-to-be-closing LPK’s Culinary Groove. Lesia and the people at LPK founded the business on certified organic, fairly/horizontally traded ingredients, and certified local/sustainable ingredients whenever possible, and were conscious of their choices, environmental impact, and causes they supported. I loved seeing them at events and farmers markets, because it usually meant that I had something to eat (like when they were one of the few vegan/vegetarian food options at the Green Living Show…) And I want to take this opportunity to share part of Lesia’s post on her blog (please read the rest of it) that I found especially essential to read, and take to heart. Please consider taking some extra time when it comes to making food choices, by really becoming aware of who and where your food…
