Griffin Takeaway – Roadtrip 2014 – Saskatoon

I’m still travelling back in time on our Summer Roadtrip, back in July and August 2014. After we had left our lovely AirBnb in the morning and were ready to head out of town, we made three final stops in Saskatoon before driving on to Edmonton via Lloydminster. First, I visited with a Saskatoon friend and fellow volunteer and animal lover I hadn’t seen in a few years. While I spend a lot of time communicating with people online, it’s quite nice to actually get some face time in, especially since we were in town at the same time. Plus, I got to see her friendly walkable rescue spokescat Joy, again which was also great. Later JC & I visited Dad’s Organic Market – which is a great market that seems to have expanded since I lived in Saskatoon. They have a variety of organic, natural, and vegan-friendly goods. There were a few unexpected finds there – like a package of vegan gluten free perogies from local Saskatoon company Raduga Foods (unfortunately, our cooler wasn’t quite cool enough – so I never got to try them.) Finally – we went to Griffin Takeaway – which was incredibly exciting, because it opened shortly after I moved away, and I’ve just been watching it from a far for a few years, and it’s an especially vegan-friendly bakery and take-away spot in Saskatoon. We stocked up on several treats for the road and they put up with me running around gleefully taking pictures of all the vegan offerings. I’m not sure how…

Through Being Cool Vegan Bakery in Toronto – New!

So the vegan internet has been a buzz about Through Being Cool Vegan Bakery opening up to the public this weekend. You might have tried Through Being Cool baked goods before at other places around the city – I know I’ve eaten some delicious examples of their skills a few times at Disgraceland. Unfortunately, I was out of the city for an organizing meeting at a cottage this weekend (okay – it’s not really that unfortunate), so I missed TBC’s opening day on Sunday, September 29th,  But JC was kind enough not only to bring home a box of donuts and whoopie pies, but took a bunch of pictures too so i didn’t feel like I missed out. What a sweetie. Of course, on Monday I was in the area (and made sure I was in the area) picking up my wedding dress (ack), so I walked over to Through Being Cool and checked it out. However stressful and cumbersome it is to travel around with a large dress bag as a non car-driver, donuts help and felt like a natural pairing at that moment. It’s quite a lovely space, but don’t take my word for it. Go there yourself. First thing I noticed when I walked in were the shelves covered in preserves. There is ketchup, BBQ Sauce, as well as varieties of pickled vegetables, mustards, and sauces. TBC uses Anchored Coffee in house, and also sells several bagged varieties. Anchored is an ethical coffee project/roaster out of Nova Scotia…

Tori’s Bake Shop – It’s Pumpkin time

One of my favourite autumn traditions, as leaves begin to change colour, and fall, and the weather gets a little cooler, it’s time for pumpkin flavoured everything. Some people seem to react to this in a derisive way. Not me. Pumpkin flavoured beer (especially the pumpkin pie brew from Mill Street Organic), pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pies, pumpkin everything, pumpkin cake, pumpkin curry, sign me up. I was recently reminded that it’s been a while since we last visited Tori’s Bake Shop, and since we were renting a zipcar this weekend to drop off bags of clothing to charity, it seemed like a great time to drive over for a visit. I felt beckoned by the Pumpkin Pie Pour, and a friend had told me about chocolate croissants, so on the off chance they’d have some, we went.
