Special Event Sunday! Vegan Thanksgiving

We did our small thanksgiving a little early (today), because J has his family’s one on Monday (the real day). I’m not a big fan of the smell of roasting turkey, to the point that it makes me pretty nauseous, so I’ll be skipping the big family event tomorrow and spending it chopping cranberries finely and sprinkling them all over one of Emmie’s wet food cakes in an attempt to be Thanksgiving festive. picture by Eye of Einstein on Flickr used under CC Last year I prepared a feast for myself, and ate it while house/cat sitting during other people’s long weekend getaways. This time, I tried to cook, while fasting for Yom Kippur, preparing a Break Fast meal (vegan matzo ball soup), and also cat sitting during other people’s long weekend getaways. Goal for next year: leave town. (I’m kidding… or am I?) Real goal for next year: Invite people over for a Turkey-less vegan thanksgiving. My menu this year includes: – Cornbread Muffins, solely because I love them and they make me happy. – Onion gravy from Colleen Patrick-Goudreau’s 30 Day Vegan Challenge – Smashed garlicky potatoes. – Grapefruit Blackpepper Cranberry Sauce based a bit on last year’s recipe – The same cranberry stuffing from last year – Stuffed pepper squash. Fun in Toronto – Magic Oven (again), Sneaky Dee’s (again!), More TIFF stuff, and Kale Restaurant.

It’s been an amazing few days. I had the opportunity to be an event scavenger for a few TIFF screenings after some friends were either too burnt out, or just not able to attend films. I saw Tamara Drewe the new one from Stephen Fears (which I didn’t like) and Jucy from Australia (which I loved.) Before I went and saw Jucy with an old friend, I dropped in to Magic Oven for a pizza. Last time I tried the “vegan magic” because well… why not. This time around I tried the “tropical magic” and I’m so glad I did. The pizza came out with a decent helping of Daiya cheese and big juicy chunks of pineapple. I even inspired someone else to order that one. Yum. One thing I’ve always wanted to do is be a member of a live studio audience (don’t judge đŸ˜€ ) So I signed up to go on The Hour through the CBC website. It seems like a great thing to take an out of town visitor, so I know I’ll keep an eye out for future shows if/when my family visits me. I have a long standing love of the CBC, ever since I little and called in to the Radioactive radio show for their quizzes (which by the way… I won stuff from them several times. African Kale Stew – First try.

I’m back in Saskatoon with a bit more permanence now, it’s kind of nice to know I’ll be in one place for more then a month. New years was spent in the magical land of Portland, with a few trips to Sweetpea Bakery, Diablo’s and Bete Lukas. Though I didn’t take pictures of any of it, which was a change from the usual. My main reason for going was to spend time with friends, and to celebrate my birthday. It was actually quite nice to go back there so soon after the last visit. I miss those folks a lot. Anyway, enough of that stuff. I’ve been cooking a lot, and it’s probably because I feel very comfortable in my now entirely vegan kitchen. A friend of mine passed on a recipe for “African Kale Stew” that I am now in love with. I’m not sure where he got it (neither is he), but if you recognize it let me know. AFRICAN KALE STEW 4 c. vegetable soup stock 1/2 c. green onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 c. chickpeas 1/2 c. brown rice 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. natural peanut butter 2 c. kale, chopped 2 tbsp. lemon juice Soy sauce, to taste Chili sauce, to tasteSautĂ© onion in a large pot with garlic. Add stock, potatoes, chickpeas, rice, salt, and kale.  Simmer, covered, for 45 minutes. In a small bowl, blend peanut butter with1/2 c. of liquid from the stew and lemon juice.
