Expowest 2015 (Photos)

I started writing this at the airport after our trip down to ExpoWest – a massive natural products trade show and networking event in Anaheim, CA, and have continued writing bits of it as time has passed. Lots of time has passed – We were at ExpoWest early last month. JC and I went last year, which lead me to post a three part look at some of the new stuff I got to see. We booked that trip in a last minute frenzy, I didn’t get much of a chance to look at some of the exhibitors I wanted to see, and there are thousands of them anyway. It’s hard to narrow it down – even with some advanced planning, it was still hard to take in everything (but I think we managed). My angle is go super intense into exploring on the Friday, and maybe into Saturday – trying everything I see that sparks my interest (and generally avoiding the ingredients section until later in the weekend) then, I have the opportunity to go back and visit some of the vendors and creators that interested me the first time around and find out a bit more information from them. My usual questions – vegan? where is it made? when/if it will be available in Canada? And whatever else they want to tell me. I attended as a retailer last year, and press this year, and it was a slightly different experience, but still generally pleasant. On the bright side…

Awesome Vegan Stuff We Saw At ExpoWest – Part Three – Non-Dairy Cheese & Other Products

I’m surprised and also not surprised how much I have to say about my first visit to ExpoWest. I never expected to have so many posts on one event, but there are genuinely a lot of interesting products releasing new or new-to-me ideas. Part one focused on the vegan meats & other alternatives Part two focused mostly on milks and frozen desserts. This is part three, focused on the Non-Dairy Cheese Co’s, the Not Butters, and the Miscellaneous non-dairy products we were into at the show. Non Dairy Cheeses TEESE It’s still mostly a mystery why I can’t find Teese in Canada other than to order it online, but I suppose a huge reason is the widespread success of Daiya (and the fact that Daiya is a Canadian company.) Teese was one of the first vegan cheeses I ever ate on a pizza, so I have a fondness for their mozzarella, especially if it’s grated and melted a little. There was nothing new being shown off over at the Teese Booth, but it always feels new to me, especially since I still think of them as part of “Chicago SoyDairy” where their name is as of at least 2012 actually “Chicago Vegan Foods“. They’ve got a couple of cheesy sauces (Nacho sauce, and creamy chedder sauce) that sound delicious, and we’re kind of kicking ourselves for not just buying a case of the stuff at the show. Heck, even as we were walking away, JC turned to me and said… we should have just ordered…

Awesome Vegan Stuff We Saw At ExpoWest – Part Two – Not Dairy Milks

This is a continuation of yesterday’s post on the awesome stuff we tried at ExpoWest last week. Yesterday I covered a few of the Not Meat & Other Alternative products, There were lots to choose from for that category, and also lots to choose from in the Non-Dairy Dairy-like products as well. Here are some of the non-dairy milks or alternative products that we saw at ExpoWest last week. There will be another non-dairy ExpoWest finds post up tomorrow. There was a lot of wonderful stuff, and I haven’t even touched on all of it. Yogurt There were a couple of non-dairy yogurts I tried at the Expo that I liked, but there were two that I just loved. Coyo Coconut based Yogurt “Alternative” Coyo has been around for a few years in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, but launched on Friday March 7th, 2014 in the USA (on the first day of ExpoWest). I had the mango variety and it was phenomenal. Coyo seems coconut cream based, with the familiar tanginess of yogurt. It comes in a few different varieties other than mango, they also have natural, mixed berry, and chocolate. I’ve asked on Twitter when/if they’ll be in Canada, but I guess I’ll just be patient. WholeSoy & Co It was nice to see WholeSoy & Co at ExpoWest. I’m sure you’ve heard about their factory problems. Shortly after they entered the Canadian market a year or so ago, trouble hit them and they stopped being able…

Awesome Vegan Stuff We Saw At ExpoWest – Part one – Meat

I went down to California last week to check out ExpoWest and soak up some sunshine. It was a pretty spectacular show and an amazing point of convergence for distributors, promoters, exhibitors, marketers, health professionals, and bloggers. I originally went without intending to blog about it. I was focused on finding out out about new products and their distribution schemes and availability – especially in Eastern Canada (consider that some foreshadowing to some potentially exciting future event.) I might also have misinterpreted the ExpoWest guidelines that said no photos (for non-press folks). But eventually, I couldn’t help it, there were so many exciting things there, that I wanted to share and started posting a  bunch on facebook, instagram, and twitter as I stumbled upon it (check out the #VegansAtExpo hashtag for a fun time.) Every time I asked a company rep if they were okay with me taking photos they seemed really excited and friendly about it, so that encouraged me to keep doing it. I cant even begin to cover all the cool stuff I saw, at least not in a single blog post, so I’m breaking it up into a few sections. First, I’d like to start with all the meat alternatives. There were LOTS at the show. Some of them were new, or just new-to-me, but here are some of the ones I tried and liked. Fishless Fish Products Sophie’s Vegan Toona There were three different fishless fish products that launched at ExpoWest, but I only really…
