Vegan Baked Treats in Toronto

Vegan Boston Cream Donuts

I have a sweet tooth, that much is probably obvious to anyone that knows me (or has ever read this blog). It’s a rare occurrence that I don’t pick up dessert… or consider skipping a regular meal in favour of something sweet (though, this includes fruit…) In the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to indulge in (arguably) the best baked goods in Toronto. Hot Beans(160 Baldwin St. Toronto) in Kensington Market and Bunner’s Bake Shop (3054 Dundas West, Toronto) in The Junction keep putting out deliciousness, proving beyond a reasonable doubt that vegan baked treats are fantastic. Bunner’s goes a step further in proving that it’s possible to make gluten free baked treats that are fluffy and delicious.

Vegan Donuts from Hot Beans Toronto

I watched one of the folks at Hot Beans make Boston Cream Donuts on Friday. I sat there, appreciating the process and waiting for a friend. She wasn’t stingy with the filling (it is always been disappointing to bite into a nearly empty “filled” donut.) There was a healthy layer of chocolate on top and an unbeatably fresh, fluffy, deep-fried donut to bite into. I ordered two… one for right away… and one “for a friend” (really, it was for a friend, but he was kind enough to share Donut#2 with me.) In this case I think pictures speak louder than words, and I look forward to the future appearance of these donuts, because much like the espresso glaze and the lime coconut, the Boston cream donut is a total winner.

On Saturday we walked over to High Park to capitalize on the great weather and to take a look at the recent appearance of cherry blossoms near Grenadier Pond. The park is beautiful and worth checking out if you’re in the neighbourhood (and even if you’re not!)

Bunner’s Bake Shop is permanently linked in my memory with any mention of High Park (mostly because that’s the TTC stop I get off at to get there), so I suggested we could stop in and pick up a few treats. Perfect timing. Vegan butter tarts, fresh out of the oven (and so ooooey goooey melty buttery good). There were mini donuts, which aren’t quite like the mini donuts of my childhood memories, but they came so close, that it was impressive. My friend picked up a box full of baked goods as a house warming gift, and everyone (including omnivores and gluten enthusiasts) seemed to really like everything.

Day one of Veggielicious – Rawlicious in the Junction and Bunner’s (of course!)

Today was the first day of Veggielicious, and a group of us headed to Rawlicious in the Junction to take advantage of the specials. I’ve never been to Rawlicious (3092 Dundas Street West, Toronto), so it was a great opportunity to try out a new restaurant and its close proximity to Bunners Bake Shop (3054 Dundas Street West, Toronto) didn’t hurt either.

Rawlicious was having a special for a smoothie and a wrap plus a side salad for $15. I opted for the ChocoMinty smoothie, which is made with nutmilk, banana, raw chocolate powder, agave and peppermint, and it was really pleasant but I think the next time I try them I’ll have to get the creamsicle one. I watched a friend’s expression change from indifferent to ecstatic in a matter of seconds after drinking in a bit of that smoothie, so clearly, have to try it. Pardon the cellphone photos, I’ll be getting my real camera back in action tomorrow.

I asked our server which of the wraps she’d recommend and I’m glad I followed her advice, while the cesar wrap sounded delicious, I went with the taco one. Major selling point of the taco wrap – the fresh guacamole and the salsa nut cheese combo. It also had a seasoned nut based meat, chopped tomatoes and lettuce, all wrapped up in a collard green leaf. Hearty and delicious. I left Rawlicious feeling full and totally satisfied.

However, when in The Junction, I can’t help but stop into Bunner’s Bake Shop, which just happens to have a veggielicious special going on too. It’s just a short 1 minute walk from Rawlicious so it was a must do. Their veggielicious snack pack includes your choice of creamie (kind of like a whoopie pie), any one of their awesome cupcakes and the always phenomenal gypsy cookie for $7.50. A friend and I also grabbed the last two creme eggs of the day. So glad we made it in time.

Both the chocolate and the filling were so rich I was really glad I had someone to share it with. All in all, a great first Veggielicious day. I’m really looking forward to trying some of the other restaurants on the list!

Toronto: Bunner’s Bake Shop – Gluten Free Vegan Bakery.

I was rummaging around on the internet this weekend and noticed a posting about Bunner’s Bake Shop (3054 Dundas W, Toronto, ON) opening on Saturday. Well, I was out in the Kawartha Lakes area at the time (p.s. vegan options in Lindsay? not so much), “enjoying” the freezing rain, so I couldn’t make it. But when I got back to town, I rushed over to try them out.

Bunner's Bake Shop Gluten Free Vegan

I have to admit, while I was researching other cities and their vegan restaurants and cafes for VeganMofo, I was dreaming that Toronto would soon have a vegan bakery of it’s very own (that I could get to with public transit; I can’t forget about the Vegan Danish Bakery in Thornhill!!!) and so it was THRILLING to hear that one had actually opened. Honestly though when I heard “vegan bakery” I was excited, but when I saw gluten free was involved I was a little disappointed. I know there are great gluten free products out there, I just haven’t had many. Well, until now. When I’m saying this place is good, it’s not just gluten-free good. It’s actually good.

From the moment I walked into the place, I wished I lived closer so I could go there every morning and buy a cookie, donut, muffin, cupcake, coffee, whatever. The people working there are so damn friendly and helpful, I hope they succeed, and I hope coffee shops and cafes around the city start using them as their source of vegan baked goodness.

I walked in with my usual wide-eyed overwhelmed excited face, not knowing what to order or where to begin, but knowing full well that I would likely end up trying everything eventually. They gave me a run down of what they had and offered some decent recommendations, and I’m glad I tried the “gypsy” cookies. Why are they called gypsy cookies? I don’t know. But I was completely sold. Oats, melty chocolate chips, seeds, dried cranberries and a few other things combined into a soft chewy cookie. I want to go back again soon so I can shove another one (or three) in my mouth.

Gluten Free DONUTS!

When I went in there were cupcakes (three different kinds: vanilla, chocolate and red velvet), DONUTS, amazingly yummy cookies (gypsy cookie), freshly baked loaves of bread (which I’m kicking myself for not trying), muffins, and cookie sandwiches! But I imagine it changes day by day.

I brought my camera without a memory card so I took a few quick pictures, but I’ll be back again with more photo space next time. Go there!
