Last few days in Philly – More Walking and food heaven at Horizons.

My trip to Philadelphia wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Philadelphia Art Gallery, to satisfy my inner art nerd, and taking a trip over to Horizons, to satisfy my inner vegan foodie glutton, and luckily, I was able to do both.

On Saturday a friend from New York came to visit me in Philly. It always amazes me how easy it is to get around on the east coast. I showed him Sweet Freedom Bakery, it was a great excuse to visit again, but the main reason he came other then to walk around Philly with me, was to go to Horizons restaurant. It wasn’t exactly an ideal day for exploring. The city was at about 96% humidity and covered in a warm (to me) mist, so I didn’t take many pictures of our galivanting around the city for fear of camera destruction. Though we probably walked over 10 miles just because we(I) felt like it.

Eventually we walked over to Horizons (611 S. 7th Street Philadelphia, PA) and I couldn’t help but say to myself… this isn’t where I expected this place to be. But it didn’t matter. We walked in, excited, salivating, overjoyed, it’s hard to live up to the hype, but I think for the most part it did. The Host was friendly and sat us  upstairs and onto the side. It was night time, and the restaurant is quite dim and intimate, so conditions weren’t ideal for picture taking. I apologize in advance, I did the best I could with what I had.

The menu offered a really decent selection, not so many options to be overwhelming, but enough to satisfy nearly anyone (with the exception of an adamant carnivore). Both of us had read over the menu days before on their website, but it was still hard to decide. Eventually we decided on appetizers. The Purple Potato Pierogies were just a given, because we just HAD to. For some reason, we expected them to actually be purple on the outside, but instead we got two fluffy pastries stuffed with purple potato. The pierogies were sitting on top of a bed of cilantro, avocado and pickled red onion, and the combination was delicious. There was an aji amarillo crema and a sliced olive as a garnish.

Salt Roasted Golden Beets

We also ordered the Salt Roasted Golden Beets, a dish that reminded me a lot of smoked salmon, probably because visually, the pieces of faintly red paysanne cut beets, looked a little like it, and the smoked tofu did not taste like the usual over smoked tofu I’ve eaten in the past. It was quite good It was topped with a few slices of thinly sliced pumpernickel bread, and surrounded with a creamy lightly salty cucumber dill sauce. All of the ingredients complimented one another. It was a complete pleasure to eat both of these.

Grilled Seitan

Then it was time for entrees. We took forever trying to decide on which ones to order, eventually, it came down to three choices. But it wasn’t easy. I had heard that the Griled Seitan was delicious and highly recommended, and then the Porcini “Shepherds Pie” just sounded divine. We got a side order of Shaved Brussels Sprouts (with truffle mustard!)

Shaved Brussels Sprouts with truffle mustard

Both dishes were beautiful. The Porcini “Shepherds Pie” had layers of black trumpets, truffled celery root puree and a bottom layer of  a juicy portobello mushroom top. It was surrounded by a pool of grain mustard sauce. I didn’t really get the truffled flavour of the celery root, but I definitely enjoyed the flavour and texture of the black trumpets, it was such a good combination with the celery root combo.

Porcini "Shepherds Pie"

Then we switched dishes and I tried the Grilled Seitan. It was interesting. The first piece of seitan I had wasn’t very yummy, it was a little on the dry side and I thought… what was everyone talking about? This is like every other piece of seitan I’ve eaten. BUT, I grabbed a piece from the center and it was absolutely perfect, not spongy, but instead it had an interesting and tender texture.

Chocolate filled beignets covered with powdered sugar.

Dessert though. Oh dessert. We were already full, and my dining companion isn’t much of a dessert person, but we decided on the Chocolate filled beignets covered with powdered sugar. I think what really made it win the dessert contest was the side of hot chocolate an marshmallow fluff. Many loud and inappropriate but hilarious ball jokes were made that night. Horizons was all around a great time. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to eat there.

The next day I went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art(2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA), on their pay what you can Sunday. It’s fun to seek out the free museum days, because nearly every city has them. I feel pretty happy about taking advantage of those days, even more so when they serendipitously happen on the day I want to go.

This museum holds one of my favourite pieces of ridiculous art. One of the reproductions of Duchamp’s “Fountain” and a piece called Bride… also by Duchamp.

I spent my last night in Philly watching the SuperBowl and eating delivery from New Harmony (because really, the novelty of ordering vegan Chinese food delivery was too much to pass up… since it’s something I can’t do in Toronto) in preparation for a 3am bus trip to DC.

Philly Day Two – More walk, less eat.

My second day in Philly was definitely more of an on foot exploration than a destination based exercise. But I did have a few places on my mind when I headed out.

In the morning I walked over to The Academy of Natural Sciences (1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA), snapped a few photos, picked up a couple of postcards and squished a penny as is my tradition (and slight obsession.)

The Franklin Institute (222 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA)is just a short walk away, and the Ben Franklin Memorial is in there. I’ve already seen the Leonardo featured exhibit they had going on (at the OMSI in Portland, OR), so I decided to just enjoy the free parts, and skip the learning adventure. It was cool to visit my first Presidential Memorial site, though of course, there were a lot more to visit when I visited DC.

I was a bit hungry, so a friend and I went over the the Reading Terminal Market (51 North 12th Street Philadelphia, PA) I wanted to get Philly cheesesteak sandwich from Basic 4 Vegetarian Cafe, because everyone was raving about the “vegan” philly cheesesteak on yelp, but I’m not really sure the soy cheese they use is vegan. It isn’t marked as such on the menu, and I couldn’t get a straight answer from the person working there. I opted to leave, because I didn’t feel like spending 10 dollars buying a sandwich from a rude person.

A cookie and a donut from Sweet Freedom Philadelphia

I’m glad I did, because instead of that place, I decided it would be a good time to check out the gluten free vegan bakery, Sweet Freedom (1424 South Street Philadelphia, PA)and I found out that it’s always a good time to visit Sweet Freedom. I ordered a donut,  how could I not try the caramel chocolate one? and a double mint chocolate chip cookie, which ended up being my favourite (as evidenced from three encore purchases over the next two days). They are really close to Lombard-South Station on the Broad Street Line via SEPTA, but I just walked over from downtown.

I had wanted to visit the Polish American Cultural Center (380 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA), but by the time I got there, they had closed. It was interesting to find out that Philadelphia has the fourth largest population of Polish people in the United States. Maybe next time I’m in Philly I’ll get the chance to do a walk through.

Conveniently, the Chemical Heritage Foundation (315 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA) was right across the park, and had extended hours for First Fridays.  They had a special exhibit of chemistry related art and the opening reception was the day I visited. Since chemistry was my focus in university and I love art, it was especially exciting to see a artistic visual and creative representation of certain concepts. The information book to the exhibit was worth picking up, because each page had stories from the artists but it also had a perforated section where you could detach a postcard with one of the pieces of art on it. Loved it so much I might have picked up two…

After the chemistry excitement, I was done for the night. I debated ordering delivery from New Harmony restaurant, for the novelty of being able to order vegan delivery (which, besides pizza is not really an option in Toronto). But walking over to Govinda’s Gourmet to Go (1408 South Street, Philadelphia, PA) won out. Govinda’s Gourmet to Go is a vegan friendly restaurant/take out place conveniently located near Sweet Freedom, so I picked up another one of those delicious double mint chocolate cookies, and bought a giant chicken cheese sandwich on a hoagie roll from Govinda’s. (a hoagie roll is a word that originated in Philadelphia, and is used chiefly in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to describe a sub, torpedo, etc sandwich on an oblong piece of French or Italian bread. I didn’t know the etymology of it, so I had to look it up and share it.) They are also a good source of desserts from Vegan Treats, but I felt like I had indulged in sweets enough for the day.

Chicken Cheesesteak

The Chicken Cheese sandwich was really tasty. It’s easy to see how every vegan I asked suggested going there. And people with a thing against fake cheese can get dairy cheese if it makes them happy. Though the vegan cheese sauce is actually really really good. The addition of Follow Your Heart mayo really gives it a nice creamy hearty flavour. I was glad to have given it a try.

Then I was off to check out the last few remaining hours of Saturday’s Philly Tattoo Convention, and back to my temporary home to rest up for the next day.

Philadelphia Day One – eating in a very wander-able city.

I had planned on doing a blog post planning out my trip to Philly, but here I am in Philly, and no nicely organized trip plan was written up. Besides a scratched up piece of notebook paper, I didn’t do much planning at all. Although I’m regretting not writing one up during last years Vegan Mofo, it’s nice to just go with the flow. Oddly enough, I’m actually doing some work here, so there is more to my time in Philadelphia then just eating great food, visiting old historical sites and art galleries. The only plan I have is to do plenty of everything.

We arrived yesterday afternoon after a 10 hour drive from Toronto. My original idea was to head through Baltimore and Washington DC, but due to Snovereaction in Toronto, my bus to Baltimore was cancelled. Luckily some friends were heading down for the Philly Tattoo Convention and let me join them on the road.

After checking into the hotel, I figured it was about time to start exploring the city with the goal of finding some food. I was happy to see the vegan options at seven eleven I had heard about, but decided to skip those in favour of some New Harmony Vegetarian Restaurant (135 N. 9th Street, Philadelphia, PA) in Chinatown. Gave me the opportunity to walk through some interesting statue gardens and old beautiful buildings.

When I walked into New Harmony, it was kind of on the empty side, but it didn’t matter. When I saw the box of vegan donuts on the counter, I knew I was home. They had a Dinner special ($12+tax) that I took full advantage of. I wish I could have done the all-you-can-eat Dim Sum, but there is a two person minimum for it. Their hours are really convenient and they will deliver, for free, so there is a good chance I might be calling on them again before I leave.

I started with a Hot and Sour soup (my favourite kind of soup) and it was totally yummy and perfect for the slightly cold day outside. Warmed me right up.

I have no idea what the other appetizer I ordered was called, but it was a type of pancake, that tasted just a little bit like hashbrowns (in a good way) and was topped with a touch of tofu mayonnaise.

Phoenix Chicken

Then came the entree. What an entree. Phoenix Chicken with lemon sauce. The breaded veggie chicken I’ve gotten very accustomed to eating at Asian vegetarian restaurants, with a shocking twist… it had a layer of veggie ham in it. Kind of weird, but also kind of awesome. It was delicious and at that point I was pretty much done eating, but there was more on the way.

Dessert. While I planned on ordering a piece of fried vegan cheesecake or a donut, my stomach said no more. But the dinner special comes with three little pieces of deep fried banana, which was exactly enough (or I should say, still too much but in a good way).

Franklin Institute

There are a lot of statues in this city, probably more then I’ve noticed in others, and since I love snapping pictures of statues and street art, my camera was busy. Add to that the significant amount of old buildings with Greek style columns, and I’m just in picture heaven. I left my tripod in a friends car, so my night photo taking was pretty limited, but I snapped a few of the Franklin Institute after visiting Liberty Square and the Free Library.

night

Friday is a day full of promise. It also happens to be the First Friday of the month, which is a special day for Old City art galleries and other participating establishments (like the Chemical Heritage Foundation). Free admission between 5pm-9pm, and special events. Sounds good to me!
